Stop sign

Could I please remind parents that the rules and regulations for school zones operate from 8.00am-9.30am and 2.30pm-4.00pm. There are no exceptions to these times during gazetted school days.

As a community we are all aware that children are vulnerable road users and at a higher risk in traffic because of their size and inability to judge speed and distance.

When in school zones, please observe the following guidelines to reduce risks to children:

  • Do not park in the school bus zone, on the zebra crossing or on footpaths
  • Please do not make a U turn in the crossing area
  • Do not park in a bus zone. These are clearly signed.
  • Never double park. This reduces driver visibility, causes congestion and puts children at risk.
  • Never call your child across the road. They should safely cross at the crossing.
  • Always encourage your child to enter and exit the car from the kerb.
  • Be patient - observe the directions of staff on duty when using the crossing or waiting for a bus.
  • Expect the unexpected! Watch out for children and think for them - they make mistakes.

By following the rules around school zones we can work together to ensure the safety of our children.

School Zone Penalties

  • Speeding - minimum fines of $128 and 4 demerit points.
  • Approach school pedestrian crossing too quickly to stop safely - $384 fine and 4 demerit points.
  • Double parking - $231 fine and 2 demerit points.
  • Stopping on or near a school pedestrian crossing - $308 and 2 demerit points.

School zone penalties apply to offences committed in school zones during posted school hours.
