Every Move We Make
In a recent Sydney Morning Herald article (July 22nd 2009) journalist Adele Horn discussed the importance of positive parent behaviour at the sporting field. In her article she outlined research which links outbursts of parent anger to the anger expressed in road rage. An interesting connection!
More importantly, the link between a child's sporting participation and parent anger is a clearly established phenomena. The more a parent engages in negative activity on the sideline, the less likely a child is to continue with their chosen sport.
In particular, parents who vent their anger at referee decisions - thereby personalising each decision made, are likely to impact adversley upon their child's enjoyment of that game. This often results in them losing the sense of achievement and involvement they once shared with their fellow team mates and their family, with many opting to drop out of sport all together.
Adele noted in her article:
"Louise Newman, professor of developmental psychiatry at Monash University, explained that some parents over-invested in (all) their children's achievements, putting them under huge pressure. At the same time, they thought their children could do no wrong and lashed out if decisions went against them."
She went on to explain that parents who exhibit this behaviour are trying desperately to protect their child, defending them at all cost. Unfortunately though, this protection - expressed in anger, can often have far reaching implications.
We all must heed the findings of this important research.
Our children learn from us in every action, reaction and attitude. They are our most astute and perceptive critics and at times we fail to realise that, for them, we are the most important role model in their life.
As a parent then, we have an enormous responsibility to raise children who can celebrate good decisions and graciously accept poor decisions - on and off the sporting field.
It is wonderful to see Scots teams playing fairly, respecting the referee and their opposition. Playing sport is as much about the process - winning is a bonus!
I am very grateful to all staff and parents who give of their time so freely to coach and manage our sporting teams and who are very positive role models for our young people. Engaging positively with your child's team and applauding their efforts is one of the most powerful role models that you as parents can provide.
