Outdoor Program
Senior Adventure provides an overview of how Scots students are pursuing and discovering adventure in the great outdoors. It aims to demonstrate how outdoor adventures can help you to learn, have fun, and develop a healthy lifestyle.
The educational gains we receive from the great outdoors are as much about respecting people, as they are about respecting our environment. Outdoor education enables us to share simple experiences, work together and get to know each other better. This includes pushing personal boundaries and challenging yourself.
Learning and sharing the knowledge of how to be good custodians of our natural resources, is also an extremely important component of outdoor education. Knowing how you can help protect and preserve the environment plays an important role in personal development.
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
At Scots, in addition to Year level programs and various outdoor excursion experiences, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme offers an opportunity for students to extend their outdoor adventures. Students at Scots are able to enrol in The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme from 14 years of age.
Activities as diverse as bushwalking, canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting and fly fishing are all included in the Scheme.
Students undertaking canoeing have the opportunity to compete in the Red Cross Murray River Marathon, whilst our kayakers can practise in the safety of the Water Parklands Lake prior to honing their skills on the mighty Murray River. Both groups have the opportunity to enjoy challenging training runs up in Sydney at the Penrith White Water Training Facility.
The Scheme helps young people make the most of their leisure time by providing a structured guideline to exploring the world around them: equipping them with knowledge, skills and experiences to enhance their development as productive and responsible members of the community.
Bushwalking
Students participating in the Bushwalking program have the opportunity the explore some of Australia's premier wilderness areas.
Expeditions take place in the Victorian and NSW Alpine areas as well as the best sections of the Hume and Hovell Walking Track. We explore remote huts, fish rarely visited rivers and soak in some of the best views this country has to offer.
For the more experienced, there is the opportunity to tackle the Overland Track in Tasmania. This 7 day expedition is internationally recognised for its unique beauty.
These trips present both physical and mental challenges, enabling participants to develop the skills to effectively prepare and navigate for extended expeditions, as well as learning effective group skills and camp craft.
To relax around a camp fire, under the stars at the end of a long day is a truly rewarding experience.
Camp Programs
Camp Week is a Scots School tradition, with Camp Week stories forming some of our past students' most vivid memories.
Camp Week is an opportunity for all participants to learn new skills, further develop old skills and spend time with their peers in both team and leadership roles.
Camp Week is a compulsory program that aims to provide a wide range of experiences and social interaction beyond that normally experienced in the classroom environment.
The focus of Camp Week is very much on participation and enjoyment; the challenges within the programs are designed to be achievable by all participants. Camp Week programs are not intended to be an intense outdoor experience requiring high-level skills. Such opportunities are made readily available through extension programs, such as The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
Wherever possible, activities at each Year level are designed to facilitate sequential development from the previous Camp experience, both in terms of skills learned and knowledge gained.
All activities are conducted in accordance with industry standards and are structured with 'safe' participation in mind.
Snow Skiing
Due to our proximity to the major Victorian ski resorts of Falls Creek and Mount Hotham, a large contingent of students and their families are able to make the best use of the facilities each winter.
Special coaching programs are conducted throughout the ski season, with school teams competing in the Inter-School and Australian Secondary School's Skiing Championships.
Because of these opportunities, it would be hard to find a school with a more enthusiastic group of skiers at both Primary and Secondary levels!
Adventure Racing
The Adventure Racing Team is a group of dedicated students who enjoy the physical and mental challenge of competing in Mountain Bike and Adventure races. Adventure races typically include navigating your way around a course as a team; it can also include a variety of disciplines such as riding, running, swimming, paddling and more.
The opportunities available for students to participate in during Term 4 include the Kathmandu Adventure Race, the 24hr Mountain Bike Endurance Race and the Anaconda Adventure Race.
