Miss Jessie Heath

Miss Jessie Heath was a pioneering educator in Albury and a key figure in the development of girls’ education in the region. Notably, she was the first student of Reverend Joseph Masters and later served as an assistant pupil teacher under his guidance, reflecting a lifelong commitment to learning and teaching.

Building on this foundation, Heath went on to purchase Glenair and Albury Presbyterian Ladies’ College, combining them to establish Springfield–Glenair. Operating from her family home, Springfield, she created a school that became known for providing a refined and well-rounded education for young ladies.

As Headmistress, Heath fostered an environment that balanced academic instruction with the social and cultural expectations of the time, earning the school a respected place within the Albury community. Her vision and initiative ensured the continuation and expansion of educational opportunities for girls, contributing significantly to the region’s educational heritage.
